Moscow/Kyiv – The potential for escalation in the Ukraine conflict is growing on two distinct fronts: advanced conventional weapons and covert maritime operations. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the U.S. about missiles, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of using spy ships.
Putin’s warning centered on the Tomahawk missile system. He stated that its delivery to Ukraine would represent a “qualitatively new stage of escalation” that would shatter relations with Washington, claiming it would necessitate the involvement of American military personnel.
This came as Putin announced significant battlefield gains, telling his military leadership that Russian forces have seized control of almost 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land in 2025, thereby securing the “complete strategic initiative.”
From Kyiv, Zelenskyy raised alarms about a different kind of escalation. He alleged that Russia is using its oil tanker fleet to conduct “reconnaissance and even sabotage activities,” a form of hybrid warfare that exploits civilian infrastructure.
The Ukrainian leader, however, projected confidence in his nation’s ability to respond. He revealed that Ukraine is collaborating with its international partners to address the issue, stating that it is “entirely possible to stop” these alleged covert actions.
