A Dangerous Game: Super League Expansion Risks War with Broadcaster

The Super League is playing a dangerous game with its future, as its plan to expand to 14 teams risks igniting a war with its most important financial partner, Sky Sports. This high-risk strategy has prompted a rebellion from clubs who fear the fallout from alienating the broadcaster could be catastrophic for the entire sport.
The central conflict is a direct disagreement over the league’s structure. Sky Sports is reportedly against the expansion and has confirmed it will not provide additional funding. By pushing ahead, the Rugby Football League (RFL) is effectively defying the wishes of the company that underwrites the competition. Clubs are warning that this is a battle the league cannot afford to lose, especially with the TV contract up for renewal next season.
This dangerous game is being played without a clear strategy, according to critics. The RFL has been accused of failing to provide clubs with a business plan or any analysis of the financial consequences of a potential falling out with Sky. This has led to a call to “press the pause button” and pursue a more collaborative and less confrontational path.
The stakes are incredibly high. A significantly reduced broadcast deal, which many see as a likely outcome of this conflict, would have a devastating impact. It could lead to reduced salary caps, a loss of star players, and could force some clubs to abandon full-time professionalism. It is this potential endgame that has so many clubs terrified.
While the RFL believes it has the mandate from a July vote to proceed, the dissenting clubs argue that this mandate did not include going to war with their broadcaster. They are now lobbying intensely to avert what they see as a completely avoidable crisis, hoping to pull the league back from a dangerous game with no guaranteed winners.
