Justice Inches Closer: Government Poised to Bring Arnolfo Teves Jr. Home for Trial

The Philippine Department of Justice has affirmed its readiness to facilitate the return of former Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr., who faces multiple murder charges, including alleged involvement in the 2023 assassination of Governor Roel Degamo. Teves, who had been hiding in Timor-Leste and seeking political asylum, was arrested by immigration authorities for entering the country without valid documentation. His arrest follows an Interpol alert and an outstanding Philippine court warrant.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla assured that the government is prepared to arrange Teves’ transfer as soon as formal proceedings are completed. While awaiting confirmation from Timorese authorities on whether deportation or extradition will be pursued, the DOJ underscored its commitment to pursuing justice through lawful means.
Teves’ legal team in Timor-Leste has challenged the arrest, filing for habeas corpus and other legal remedies to block deportation. They argue that any return would violate international asylum protections and Timor-Leste’s constitutional safeguards. However, President José Ramos-Horta stressed that national interest and regional security override outdated decisions, asserting that Timor-Leste must not shelter fugitives.
Janice Degamo, widow of Governor Degamo and newly elected congresswoman, hailed the arrest as a major milestone. She emphasized the importance of accountability for those responsible for political violence in Negros Oriental, calling it a long-awaited step toward healing and justice.
As international cooperation strengthens, the Philippines edges closer to holding those accused of grave crimes accountable, signaling hope for victims and families seeking closure.
