Brighton & Hove Albion earned a valuable point at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, holding Manchester City to a 1-1 draw that extends the champions’ winless run to three Premier League matches. City now sit five points behind leaders Arsenal.
Manchester City opened the scoring four minutes before halftime through an Erling Haaland penalty. The Norwegian converted after VAR confirmed that Diego Gomez had fouled Jeremy Doku inside the penalty area. The goal was Haaland’s 150th for the club, ended his three-match goal drought, and took him to 20 Premier League goals for the season.
City nearly doubled their lead early in the second half when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton defensive error, but his shot rebounded off the post. The match became heated when a confrontation erupted between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Brighton drew level in the 60th minute through a well-executed finish from Kaoru Mitoma. The Japanese winger collected a pass from wide, positioned himself at the edge of the box, and curled a low shot into the far corner with excellent technique.
The visitors grew in confidence after equalizing, taking command of possession and the game’s tempo. They came agonizingly close to claiming all three points when Mitoma’s excellent work created a chance for Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s follow-up attempt from near the byline struck the woodwork. City’s final opportunity fell to Haaland in stoppage time when he broke clear, but Verbruggen’s outstanding save denied the Norwegian and secured a point for the Seagulls.
