Power Play or Crime? Leiweke Accused of Rigging $388M Arena Deal

Timothy Leiweke, a towering figure in the sports industry, has been charged with criminal conspiracy in a bid-rigging scandal involving the Moody Center in Austin. Federal prosecutors say he conspired to ensure his company won the development rights to the $388 million facility by eliminating competition.
From 2018 to 2024, Leiweke allegedly engaged in secret talks with Legends Hospitality, persuading them to withdraw their competing bid in exchange for a piece of the project later. When those subcontracting promises weren’t fulfilled, Legends was left out—and Oak View Group had a clear path to win.
The arena opened in 2022 and quickly became a financial and cultural asset to the University of Texas. But that success may now be overshadowed by legal turmoil and reputational damage to all involved.
Leiweke faces serious penalties if convicted, including a lengthy prison sentence. The charges serve as a stark reminder that ethical lapses in business can carry criminal consequences.
