Is the US Playing Favorites? Russia Eyed for Deals, India Gets Tariffs

Accusations of the US playing favorites in its foreign policy are likely to grow, as the administration considers major energy deals with Russia while simultaneously hitting India with punitive tariffs. The differing treatment of the two nations over the issue of Russian trade is stark.
India is being treated with a heavy hand. President Trump has authorized tariffs that will soon reach 50%, a measure explicitly designed to punish the country for importing Russian oil. The message is one of zero tolerance for such economic activity.
Russia, however, is being approached with offers of cooperation. High-level talks have broached the subject of Exxon Mobil re-entering the country’s energy sector and other potential deals. This is being done to entice Russia into peace talks over Ukraine.
This disparity creates the impression that the rules of international trade, as enforced by the US, are not applied equally. Instead, they appear to be flexible tools used to reward or punish nations based on the administration’s immediate strategic objectives, raising questions about fairness and reliability.
