Philippines to Address Chinese Envoy’s Remarks on South China Sea Tensions

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced plans to meet with Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan following comments made by the ambassador that were perceived as a potential threat of conflict between China and the Philippines. Marcos noted that the ambassador’s remarks implied that China could easily win a confrontation by force, raising concerns amid ongoing maritime disputes between the two nations.

The remarks were met with criticism from the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs, which described them as an implied threat that could damage diplomatic relations. The department urged diplomats to refrain from making statements that could undermine mutual trust or disrupt constructive dialogue. The tension arises from continuing disagreements over maritime issues in the South China Sea, where both nations have competing claims.

In response, the Chinese Embassy clarified that Ambassador Jing emphasized Beijing’s preference for peaceful relations and that there was no intent to use force. The embassy called on both countries to engage in discussions, manage disagreements, and avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

Both the Philippines and China have stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving their differences, but the recent exchange has added strain to their already complex bilateral relations. The situation underscores the delicate balance both countries must maintain to manage their maritime disputes peacefully.
