Zaqy Mohamad has taken on the role of Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs in Singapore, committing to engage closely with the Muslim community to better understand its needs. His appointment follows the resignation of Faishal Ibrahim, who left his political office, Parliament, and the People’s Action Party on July 20. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong attributed Faishal’s resignation to a lapse in judgment related to his interactions with a female member of the public.
In his new position, Zaqy aims to collaborate with the M3+ network, volunteers, and community partners. His focus will be on enhancing programs designed to support and uplift the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore. “There is a lot of important work ahead of us, and we must continue building on the progress our community has made,” Zaqy remarked, emphasizing the importance of maintaining dedicated support for the community.
Reflecting on Faishal’s departure, Zaqy expressed his sadness, noting their close working relationship spanning nearly two decades. The circumstances surrounding Faishal’s resignation have been a source of disappointment among several Malay-Muslim lawmakers and community leaders, who nonetheless acknowledged his contributions while in office.
