Singapore is championing the use of open-source artificial intelligence as a key factor for fostering innovation and enhancing accessibility, particularly benefiting startups and economies that are still developing. Josephine Teo, the country’s Digital Development Minister, emphasized that open-source AI models enable smaller enterprises to utilize advanced technology without incurring the significant expenses that come with proprietary platforms.
Teo, speaking in the context of the UN-backed AI for Good Global Commission, advocated for the initiative to support open AI models. She pointed out that by doing so, the positive impacts of artificial intelligence can be distributed more equitably across the globe. This approach, according to her, would ensure that technological advancements are not confined to a select few but are instead shared widely.
The minister also underscored the importance of regional cooperation in advancing AI development. She cited the collaborative efforts within ASEAN, which have focused on multilingual AI projects, as a practical example of how countries can join forces to promote inclusive and responsible innovation in artificial intelligence.
By backing open-source AI, Singapore aims to provide opportunities for smaller players in the tech industry to compete and innovate on a more level playing field. This strategy aligns with broader goals of ensuring that AI technologies are developed and utilized in a manner that is beneficial to a diverse array of communities worldwide.
