Disney and OpenAI Alliance Enables Character-Based Social Videos

A strategic alliance between Disney and OpenAI enables character-based social videos through a $1 billion investment and licensing deal. The agreement provides Sora with access to more than 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars properties for AI-generated content.
The three-year partnership announced Thursday allows Sora users to create short videos featuring Disney characters through text-based prompts. These AI-generated social videos can be viewed and shared by fans, representing a new form of audience engagement. The agreement specifically prohibits the reproduction of talent likenesses or voices.
Disney’s involvement with OpenAI encompasses operational transformation. The entertainment company will deploy OpenAI’s tools for new product development and customer experiences, while implementing ChatGPT across its workforce. This broad integration signals Disney’s view of AI as transformative to its business model.
Bob Iger, Disney’s chief executive, framed the collaboration as marking a critical juncture for the entertainment sector. He stressed that Disney would approach generative AI thoughtfully and responsibly, ensuring the technology extends the company’s storytelling capabilities while protecting creators and their contributions. This careful language addresses ongoing concerns about AI’s impact.
The entertainment industry has largely avoided AI partnerships, wary of data usage and labor relations. OpenAI has engaged with several major studios about Sora’s creative and commercial applications, but Disney’s agreement represents a significant breakthrough. The updated Sora platform, launched in September as an invitation-only app, enables users to generate videos from text prompts, view community content, and create realistic AI avatars with user-granted permissions.
