Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional collaboration as they gear up to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in successive years, with Singapore slated for 2027 and Thailand for 2028. This commitment was underscored during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat in Bangkok on September 2, marking the first such meeting between Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first bilateral retreat in over a decade. Both leaders emphasized the strength of their bilateral ties and agreed on a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity in their ASEAN leadership roles.
Key areas of expanded cooperation include artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, and defense and security, with a focus on tackling transnational crime. Both nations reiterated their dedication to supporting a rules-based international order and bolstering ASEAN regional integration. Energy cooperation emerged as a significant topic, particularly the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project, which facilitates Singapore’s import of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia.
In addition to energy initiatives, the leaders witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on social sector development. This agreement aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and promote cooperation among relevant institutions. Such efforts demonstrate a commitment to broadening the scope of collaboration beyond economic and security concerns.
Economic ties between Singapore and Thailand remain robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has been Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, highlighting the economic interdependence and mutual benefits of their relationship.
