Investigation Underway as 8 Die in Delhi Red Fort Blast

A high-level investigation is underway after a car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi killed eight people and injured 19. The probe, led by the federal Home Ministry, began as Home Minister Amit Shah visited the scene. Shah stated that the cause remains unknown and will depend on a forensic analysis of samples from the site, promising that “all angles” will be investigated.
The blast occurred on Monday evening at a busy intersection. A car had stopped at a red light outside the Red Fort metro station when it suddenly exploded. The force of the blast was significant, damaging over a dozen nearby vehicles and sparking a fire that required dozens of fire engines to extinguish.
The registered owner of the car that exploded has reportedly been detained for questioning, marking the first significant step in the investigation. Meanwhile, the 19 injured are receiving treatment at a government hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed he is monitoring the situation and has expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.
The scene was described as “chaotic” by officials and witnesses. TV footage showed a car with its doors blown off and mangled, blackened vehicles. Witnesses recounted hearing a “very strong explosion” and seeing “body parts all over” the road, indicating the lethal power of the blast.
The incident has prompted a nationwide security response. A high alert has been declared for Mumbai, the state of Uttar Pradesh, and major train stations. This is the most serious blast in the capital since a 2011 incident at the High Court, raising renewed concerns about security in crowded public areas.
