SM Lee’s Visit Strengthens Singapore-Brunei Bilateral Partnership

During a recent visit to Brunei, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the bilateral relationship between their nations. The visit coincided with the Sultan’s 80th birthday celebrations, serving as a backdrop for discussions on shared interests and future plans. Both leaders underscored the importance of upcoming anniversaries, including the 50th anniversary of their defense ties in 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement set to be celebrated in 2027.

In their discussions, Lee and the Sultan explored opportunities to expand cooperation in several key areas. They emphasized the potential for growth in energy collaboration, food security initiatives, and efforts to bolster supply chain resilience. Additionally, they expressed a mutual interest in enhancing people-to-people exchanges, which could further strengthen the cultural and social bonds between Singapore and Brunei.

Beyond his meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Minister Lee engaged with Brunei’s Crown Prince and senior government officials. These meetings focused on strategies to foster future leadership connections and youth engagement between the two countries. Such initiatives are seen as crucial for maintaining strong ties and ensuring that the next generation continues to build on the foundations laid by current leaders.

Minister Lee’s visit also included participation in various official birthday events honoring the Sultan. He took the opportunity to meet with members of the Singapore Armed Forces who are undergoing training in Brunei, further underscoring the defense ties between the nations. Additionally, he visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, demonstrating the diverse areas of cooperation and interaction between Singapore and Brunei.
