Asian Markets Mixed Amid Controversy Over Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal

Asian stock markets experienced mixed results on Monday as Brent crude oil prices held steady above $104 per barrel. This development follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a controversial proposal to purchase diesel fuel from Russia, a move intended to alleviate fuel prices but criticized by U.S. lawmakers for potentially bolstering Russia’s energy revenues amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

In regional market movements, South Korea’s Kospi index dropped by 3.7% to 6,384.24, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index rose by 0.3% to 24,271.20. The Shanghai Composite Index fell by 0.4% to 3,797.24, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 saw an increase of 0.8% to 8,783.20. India’s Sensex index also declined by 0.8%, and Tokyo markets remained closed for a holiday. European markets showed a positive trend with Germany’s DAX rising 0.5%, France’s CAC 40 gaining 0.3%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 advancing 0.5%.

The proposed deal between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin involves an initial supply of over 300,000 tonnes of diesel, with further shipments planned. This agreement has sparked bipartisan criticism in the U.S., as opponents argue it could undermine efforts to restrict Russia’s energy income during its war with Ukraine. Trump also claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an energy ceasefire, though reports of continued attacks on energy infrastructure cast doubt on its implementation.

Meanwhile, in the oil markets, Brent crude saw a slight increase of 0.1% to $104.76 per barrel, whereas the U.S. benchmark crude fell by 0.4% to $91.50. The global energy markets remain volatile amid conflicts involving Iran and disruptions to supply chains.

In the U.S., stock futures edged higher as investors awaited significant economic data on inflation and retail sales, along with earnings reports from major banks. Additionally, a University of Michigan survey highlighted growing inflation concerns, with consumer expectations for inflation rising to 4.7% over the next year, up from 4.6% the previous month. Investors are closely monitoring corporate earnings for indications of economic resilience against a backdrop of elevated living costs and market uncertainty.
