The U.S. aviation authorities have mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max aircraft to check for potential cracks in a structural component of the fuselage. These inspections, targeting an estimated 471 planes, are slated to commence in September. The primary focus is on a component called the bear strap, which is a structural sheet supporting the fuselage around the exit doors. This move follows the discovery of similar cracks in the older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which led to inspections of those aircraft as well.
While no cracks have been reported in the 737 Max fleet to date, regulators highlighted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with its predecessors, suggesting a potential for the same problem to arise. They cautioned that if these cracks go unnoticed, they could compromise a crucial structural component, thereby affecting the aircraft’s overall structural integrity.
Boeing has acknowledged the issue and has been collaborating with airlines since its identification in 2019. The company supports the mandatory inspections, which are intended to detect and address any issues before they reach a critical state. This initiative is part of Boeing’s efforts to ensure safety and maintain engineering quality across its fleet.
