Google to Disable AI Tools by Default for Schoolchildren Worldwide

Google has announced a shift in its approach to artificial intelligence tools in educational settings, opting to disable these features by default for schoolchildren. This move grants schools greater authority over how AI technology is accessed and utilized by students in classrooms, particularly those in K-12 institutions. The policy will be rolled out globally, starting in the United States.

Under the new guidelines, AI-powered features such as Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and enhancements in Google Search will remain inactive for student accounts until school administrators decide otherwise. This decision comes amid rising concerns from educators, parents, and policymakers about the potential implications of unrestricted AI access in schools. Critics argue that over-reliance on AI could hinder students’ ability to think independently and solve problems without external assistance.

Google’s educational platforms, including Gmail, Docs, and Google Classroom, are integral to many schools, with millions of students using Google-provided Chromebook devices. The updated policy will also affect Google Search functionality in schools that choose to deactivate AI features, as artificial intelligence is now a core component of the search platform.

Previously, Google’s AI tools were implemented in Classroom to aid students in comprehending lessons, preparing study materials, creating practice assessments, and generating flashcards. However, concerns about academic integrity, student privacy, and the influence of technology on conventional teaching methods have led several school districts, including those in New York and Los Angeles, to contemplate restrictions on AI tools.

Google stated that the changes aim to offer educational institutions more flexibility and control over AI technology access. The company acknowledged the apprehension that students might exploit artificial intelligence to bypass independent schoolwork.
