Lawrence Wong Visits Timor-Leste, Honored with Top National Award

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to embark on an official visit to Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking a historic occasion as the first visit by a Singaporean prime minister to the Southeast Asian nation. During this trip, PM Wong will engage in discussions with Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. A highlight of the visit will be the presentation of the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar) to PM Wong, acknowledging Singapore’s contributions to the country’s development and its integration into ASEAN.

The visit aims to bolster bilateral ties, with both nations looking to enhance collaboration through a new framework for ongoing consultations. This initiative includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding, focusing on key areas such as governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. Singapore has been a steadfast supporter of Timor-Leste, providing training programs, technical assistance, and contributing to peacekeeping efforts since the country’s early post-independence period. The relationship has deepened following Timor-Leste’s accession as ASEAN’s newest member.

PM Wong’s itinerary also includes attending a state banquet and meeting with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. The delegation accompanying him comprises senior ministers and officials, ensuring continued governmental functions with Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong stepping in as acting prime minister during Wong’s absence.

This visit underscores the ongoing commitment of Singapore to strengthen diplomatic ties with Timor-Leste and to support its integration within regional frameworks. The discussions and agreements forged during the visit are expected to lay the groundwork for expanded cooperation, reinforcing the partnership between the two countries.
