Palace Seeks Fairness in Duterte Impeachment Trial

The Philippine government expressed hope for an impartial impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte, as public scrutiny heightened following shifts in the Senate’s leadership. This comes amid ongoing discussions about the impeachment proceedings which have now advanced to the Senate.

Claire Castro, the Palace Press Officer, emphasized that the case is under Senate jurisdiction, confirming that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will remain uninvolved in the trial process. “This is now a matter for the Senate to deliberate upon,” Castro stated during a recent press briefing. “It is important that our senators act as fair judges, because this process is for the benefit of the people.”

The statement from Malacañang underscores the administration’s stance of non-interference, highlighting that the responsibility for the proceedings lies with the legislative branch, particularly the House of Representatives and the Senate. Castro reiterated, “The House has done its part, and it is not within the President’s mandate to intervene.”

As the case moves forward, all eyes are on the Senate to conduct a fair trial, reflecting the principles of justice and impartiality. The developments in the Senate’s leadership have sparked public interest and concern, underscoring the importance of transparency and fairness in the proceedings against Vice President Duterte.
