China has urged the Philippines to cease what it terms as provocative actions in the South China Sea, emphasizing that its coast guard will persist in defending China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. This appeal from Beijing came after a Philippine supply mission to a grounded vessel at Ren’ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, an area China claims as part of its territory.
According to Chinese authorities, the Philippine vessel entered the disputed area despite receiving warnings from Beijing. In response, China’s coast guard monitored the supply ship and issued further warnings during the mission. Beijing maintains that these actions by its forces were in adherence to lawful measures.
China has accused the Philippines of breaching commitments under the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, a code of conduct aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the region. The Chinese government argues that such actions by the Philippines could potentially disturb regional harmony.
Beijing has reiterated its commitment to continue law-enforcement operations around Ren’ai Jiao and other parts of the Nansha Qundao, which the international community commonly refers to as the Spratly Islands. This, China states, is necessary to protect its asserted maritime rights.
