The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has marked a significant milestone in its naval modernization efforts with the launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), named Valour. This event, held at Benoi Shipyard, comes merely nine months after the introduction of the first vessel, Victory. The swift launch underscores progress in Singapore’s strategy to update its maritime defense capabilities, with the navy aiming to replace its aging fleet of Victory-class missile corvettes.
ST Engineering CEO Vincent Chong highlighted that the experience gained from constructing Victory enabled the company to expedite the launch of Valour by three months. This efficiency is expected to extend to the remaining vessels in this series, which include Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, all scheduled for delivery by 2028. These advanced warships are equipped to integrate various unmanned systems, making them versatile for multiple mission types.
During the launch ceremony, K. Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security, underscored the critical nature of maritime security amidst escalating global tensions and vulnerabilities in essential maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the new vessels, with an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and endurance of over 21 days at sea, will be instrumental in safeguarding Singapore’s maritime interests.
Construction is already underway on the third and fourth vessels of this class. Shanmugam praised Singapore’s capability to design, build, and sustain sophisticated naval warships domestically, attributing this achievement to years of investment in the nation’s defense industry. The project also involved complex systems integration to address power, cooling, and mission module requirements, a task managed by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned veteran with 19 years of experience in the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, has been appointed as the commanding officer of Valour. He expressed his ambition to cultivate a pioneering crew spirit that will continue to influence the future direction of the Republic of Singapore Navy.
