AI Boosts Economic Growth in Singapore’s Key Industries

Singapore is poised to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) across key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and connectivity to drive economic growth. These industries, which collectively contribute to over 40 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product, are central to the government’s AI strategy set out in Budget 2026. Trade and Industry Minister Tan See Leng emphasized that the successful integration of AI could extend benefits beyond these sectors, enhancing opportunities across related industries and the broader economy.

Minister Tan noted that the potential advantages of AI adoption would hinge on businesses’ ability to effectively redesign their workflows and incorporate AI technologies into their operations. This transformation is seen as vital for maintaining competitive edge and fostering innovation. As Singapore progresses with its AI ambitions, it will need to bolster its talent pool, capital resources, and expertise, particularly given the challenges posed by its relatively small population size.

In addition to Singapore’s efforts, Cambodian Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Hem Vanndy highlighted AI’s dual role in presenting both opportunities and challenges for Cambodia. As Cambodia continues its digital transformation journey, the minister underscored the necessity of equipping businesses and workers with the skills required to harness new technologies effectively and boost productivity.

Both ministers agreed on the importance of maintaining openness, advancing workforce development, and adapting to technological changes as countries navigate the complexities of geopolitical tensions, trade barriers, and evolving global supply chains. These strategic priorities are seen as crucial for sustaining economic resilience and fostering long-term growth in the face of global uncertainties.
