Former Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has been named the inaugural chancellor of the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), assuming the role on June 1, 2026. His term will last five years, concluding on May 31, 2031. As chancellor, Heng will hold the highest ceremonial position at the university, presiding over significant events such as graduation ceremonies and representing SIT at key institutional and external functions.
SIT highlights Heng’s extensive leadership background and professional connections as valuable assets that will enhance the university’s strategic goals. His role will involve strengthening partnerships and supporting initiatives that focus on industry collaboration and philanthropic efforts. Heng’s current roles include serving as chairman of the National Research Foundation and holding positions at GIC, including as a director and member of its Investment Strategies Committee. His prior governmental roles included Deputy Prime Minister from 2019 to 2025, Education Minister from 2011 to 2015, and Finance Minister from 2015 to 2021.
Singapore’s Education Minister, Desmond Lee, extended his congratulations to Heng, expressing confidence that Heng’s leadership and experience will be instrumental in guiding SIT’s future growth and contributions to Singapore’s higher education landscape.
