Meta’s introduction of a new AI-driven feature for Instagram, named Muse Image, has ignited privacy concerns by enabling users to generate AI images using publicly available photos from Instagram accounts by default. This development has led privacy advocates to express worries, as many users may not realize their publicly shared images are being utilized in this manner without explicit consent.
The Muse Image tool allows users to incorporate images from public Instagram profiles as references in prompts for creating personalized AI-generated content. While Meta has assured that the tool includes safety measures—such as automatically excluding private accounts and users under the age of 18—critics argue that the opt-out mechanism for adult users with public accounts is not easily accessible. To prevent their content from being used, these users must navigate to the “Sharing and Reuse” section of their privacy settings.
Despite Meta’s assurances, privacy experts maintain that the opt-out system is inadequate, asserting that users should have been given the choice to opt-in rather than having their content automatically available for AI image generation. Moreover, there are concerns that images posted by adults, which might feature children, could inadvertently be used in AI-generated content, circumventing the protections intended for underage accounts.
Meta has highlighted that Muse Image incorporates safeguards to thwart misuse and provides a mechanism for users to report any inappropriate AI-generated images. Currently, the feature is accessible via the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories within the United States, and on WhatsApp in selected countries, with plans underway for broader availability.
