In a call for increased participation from young Singaporeans, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has emphasized the importance of welcoming diverse backgrounds and perspectives into the People’s Action Party (PAP). Speaking at the celebration of the Young PAP’s 40th anniversary, Wong underscored that the party is keen on fostering a variety of ideas to ensure it continuously renews itself and remains equipped to tackle Singapore’s future challenges.
Wong’s invitation extends to those who may not always align with the PAP’s views, as he encourages participation from citizens invested in the country’s future. He acknowledged perceptions among some young Singaporeans that the PAP, as an established entity, might not require fresh membership. However, Wong argued that Singapore still holds an “underdog” status on the global stage, necessitating new generations to inject leadership and innovation into the party.
Highlighting the PAP’s stance on political engagement, Wong cautioned against politics that divide and confront. Instead, he advocated for problem-solving through collaboration, practical action, and building consensus rather than engaging in actions that could provoke public anger or deepen political divides.
The event also marked significant initiatives aimed at nurturing young leaders within the party. The launch of the Young PAP Academy promises to offer leadership training and mentorship for youth activists. Additionally, the introduction of the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship will provide S$5,000 grants to support community projects led by young members of the PAP, thereby encouraging active participation and innovative community solutions from the party’s younger cohort.
